I am trying to fill out patient’s occupation in line with the notes audits we do, which covers occupation being listed.

I am finding it hard to select and option for all patients as the occupation is a drop down menu of set ideas of an occupation.

There is a lot of occupations that aren’t on the list, nor have something similar.

How do other people manage this, and doe we feel as though it should be a free entry section, rather than a selection of prewrittten options.

A lot of patients don’t want to give this information, so would be handy to have an option to put this down too.

Hi @maddiforster  👋
This is a really good question, and it’s something a lot of practices run into when preparing for audits.

At the moment, Occupation in Dentally is limited to a fixed drop‑down list, which means if a patient’s job doesn’t closely match one of the options, it can feel awkward to record accurately. There also isn’t a specific option for things like “patient declined to state”, which I understand can be frustrating when you’re trying to document things properly rather than leave the field blank.

How practices handle this tends to vary. Some choose the closest available option for consistency, while others make a brief note elsewhere in the patient record if the occupation doesn’t fit the list or if the patient doesn’t want to provide the information. That said, neither approach is ideal for audits.

I’ll make sure to log this as a feature request for the product team to review:

  • allowing free‑text entry for occupation, or
  • expanding the list and/or adding an explicit “patient declined to disclose” option.

That would make recording this information more accurate and reflective of real‑world situations, especially for compliance and audit purposes.

If other practices have found a neat workaround that works well for audits, it would be great if they could share it here 👍
