Good morning all,

I’m wondering if there is any ‘work around’ regarding family members who share mobile/email addresses to enable them to each use the Dentally Portal.  A particular issue we have is with for example a parent whose mobile and email details are shared with a child/children.  I believe this means that only the parent can have a Dentally Portal login which therefore prevents the parent from booking their child’s appointments online/signing NHS forms in advance etc?  I would be grateful to hear if there are any ways around this or have I misunderstood something?

Many thanks

Kate

Hi Kate,

I am pretty certain that when the parent logs into the portal it will ask for their name and DOB, this should be the childs details in which case it will enable them to book the childs appointment butt perhaps @Saymon could confirm this?

Hi Lesley, thank you for your reply.  So is it that the Mum should be able to see her child’s details via her own login? ie she wouldn’t have a separate log in for her child?

I m pretty sure if she uses the portal link and puts her mobile and the childs details it opens the childs record. I’ve tried this for my son today and it definitely finds him not me

Thanks very much Lesley for your help with this and doing a test run - much appreciated! I’ve had a staff member who said she couldn’t access her daughters details via the link so I’ll delve a bit more to see what the specific issue is there.  But I am slightly confused by it all as I put the question into the ‘help’ chat on Dentally and got the below auto response.  But may this just relates to adult patients….. perhaps it reacts differently for children?…….. to be honest I’m just guessing😅!

No, family members cannot share an email and mobile number to use the Dentally patient portal. Each patient needs their own unique email address and mobile number to create and access their individual portal account.

When logging in, patients are required to enter their personal details, including their name, date of birth, email address, and mobile number. The system uses two-factor authentication, sending a code via SMS to verify the patient's identity.

While family members can be linked in Dentally for easier appointment booking and record management, each patient still needs their own unique contact information for portal access. This ensures proper security and individual access to personal health information.

When my husband come home I am going to try this again as my son is linked to his mobile number @Kate T watch this space!!

You’re very kind thanks Lesley. I’ll keep an eye out!

Hi Kate,  I works,  both my husbands phone number and email were linked to my sons account. By entering his phone number

  • he received an SMS,
  • received the code,
  • set up password,
  • Email went to my husbands address
  • He confrimed his password

And it opened my sons record.
So to answer your question YES it is possible :-)

Hey all! Patients who share mobile or email addresses can indeed access their own Portal. Whilst logging into the Portal, if the mobile or email address entered is found on multiple patient records e.g. parent and child, the patient will be asked a few other questions to make sure we find the right patient account of who is trying to login to the Portal. These additional questions are:

  • Patient First Name

  • Patient Surname

  • Patient Date of Birth

This will then direct the patient to the correct account. They’ll just need to make sure they enter the details of the patient they’re trying to login for and not their own each time.

I am so impressed with myself @Simon Guiver 🤣

Many thanks Lesley and Simon for the clarification on this, much appreciated.
